RULES TO GET MARRIED IN AUSTRALIA
The Marriage Act 1961 and Marriage Regulations 2017 set the rules for getting married in Australia.
To get married in Australia you must:
Not be married, and be able to provide proof of being legally free to marry again by producing a divorce or death certificate if you’ve been married before.
Be able to produce 100 points of identification to prove who you are, including one document with photo ID. Passports cover this, otherwise a birth certificate plus you drivers licence with a photo are also great options.
Not be marrying one of your parents, grandparents, children, grandchild, brother or sister (inc adopted siblings)
Be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where 1 person is 16-18 years old.
Understand what marriage means and freely agree to marry, Nikki, our marriage celebrant will run through this with you.
Use specific words during the ceremony: Legal Vows for you and the Monitum for the celebrant.
Lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage form with Nikki our authorised marriage celebrant at least 1 month and no more than 18 months before your wedding. Nikki will send you the link for this and set up the meeting.
Be married by an authorised marriage celebrant. This is where Nikki shines and get’s you: Effortlessly Wed!
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE:
An Australian citizen
A permanent resident of Australia.
HOWEVER, If you are not an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia and you want to live in Australia after your marriage, you should find out about getting a visa .
