Rings for a South West Elopement: Simple Is Enough

You do not need a jewellery story to get married.

Rings are lovely in photographs. They are not the marriage. On a beach in Margaret River, under karri trees, or beside a vineyard row, a simple exchange — or none at all — still counts.

Here is how to think about them without turning it into a project.

You do not have to have them on the day

Australian law does not require rings. The celebrant, the vows, the witnesses and the signatures do the legal work.

Some couples exchange bands. Some wear what they already have. Some buy them later, once the day is done and they know what they actually want on their hand. All of those are fine.

If rings are not ready, do not delay the elopement for them.

Matching is optional

A pair of identical bands looks tidy. It is not a rule.

Different metals, a ring you already wear, one person with a band and one without — the photographs will still read as the two of you. What matters is that whatever you put on feels like something you will keep wearing on a Tuesday, not only in a gallery.

What photographs well outdoors

Simple shapes. A band that catches a bit of light. Nothing so delicate it will vanish against skin, and nothing so chunky it fights the landscape.

On a windy beach, you will take them on and off. In the forest, leaf litter and damp hands are real. Choose something you can manage without a ceremony of its own.

If you want a close photograph of the rings, tell me. We will make one. We will not build the hour around jewellery.

Where to keep them until the moment

A small box in a pocket. In the celebrant’s kit. On a chain if you are worried about sand.

Do not leave them in the car “for later” and then spend ten minutes of golden light walking back. Assign one person. That is the whole system.

After the vows

You can put them straight on and leave them on. You can take them off for swimming or lunch and put them back in the box. There is no correct sequence once the words are said.

If a parent or a child is handing them over, keep that beat short. It is a nice moment. It does not need choreography.

If you are still deciding

Buy something you like, not something that matches a mood board. Or wait. The South West day does not get smaller because the rings arrive in the post next month.

Tell us if you are exchanging them so we leave a quiet second for it. Tell us if you are not, so nobody is waiting for a prop that is not coming. Either way, the marriage is the same.
