Eloping in the South West With Your Dog
Some couples already know who else has to be in the photograph.
If your dog is part of the life you are marrying into, they can be part of a small day in Margaret River — with a bit of planning. Not every beach or forest path is the right place for them. The right one usually is.
Start with the location, not the lead
Public beaches and national parks have rules. Some allow dogs on a lead. Some do not, or only at certain times. Private gardens and vineyard lawns are often simpler, because you are asking the owner, not guessing at a sign.
Tell us early that the dog is coming. We will steer you toward a setting that can actually hold them, instead of falling in love with a clifftop that cannot.
Keep the ceremony short for them too
A ten or fifteen minute vow is kinder than a long one when there is a dog in the mix.
Have one person whose only job is the lead if you both want your hands free for rings. Water. Shade. A familiar toy in the car, not necessarily in the frame.
Most dogs settle once the walking stops. Some do not. Both versions can be photographed. The aim is not a perfect still life. It is the two of you, married, with the animal who already lives with you.
Photographs work better if we do not force it
I will not ask your dog to sit for twenty minutes.
We walk. We pause where the light is good. If they lie down, we use it. If they want to sniff the edge of the frame, that often looks more like your life than a posed family portrait.
Tell me what they are like — calm, chaotic, obsessed with waves — and we will shape the hour around that.
A few practical things
A short lead, not a long retractable one on a cliff path
Poo bags, obviously
A towel for sandy paws before the car or the lunch
Check the heat. Summer asphalt and midday sand are not kind
If lunch is indoors, have a plan for where they wait
You do not need a floral collar unless you want one. A clean coat and a happy dog is enough.
When to leave them at the stay
If the only setting you love bans dogs, or the day is going to be long, hot and full of strangers, a quiet afternoon at the accommodation can be the kinder choice. You can still do a few frames with them before or after.
There is no prize for forcing it.
Say it in the first email
Beach, forest or somewhere private. Two of you, or a few people. And the dog’s name.
We will tell you straight if the spot can hold them. A South West elopement can include the whole household — as long as the place, the timing and the lead all agree.
