Flowers for a South West Elopement (Or No Flowers at All)
A big wedding treats flowers like furniture. They fill a room. They justify a budget line.
An elopement in Margaret River does not need that. The place is already doing the decorating — ocean, karri, vines. Flowers, if you want them, should be small enough to carry and honest enough to match the day.
You can also have none. That is a complete choice.
If you want a bouquet, keep it walkable
You may be on sand, leaf litter or grass. You may have wind. You will almost certainly want a free hand at some point.
A single bouquet and a buttonhole is plenty. Something you can hold for the ceremony and the walk, then put down for lunch without needing a vase strategy.
Loose, seasonal, a bit wild photographs better here than anything tight and formal. Ask for stems that can handle a breeze rather than a perfect shape that collapses in it.
Match the setting, not a Pinterest board
Coast: softer, simpler, nothing that sheds all over a public beach
Forest: greenery already surrounds you — a small bunch is enough
Vineyard: a few stems on the table later can be nicer than a huge ceremony bouquet
You do not need an arch. You do not need petals down a path. Public land often does not allow them anyway, and they fight the point of a quiet day.
Where to get them without a production
A local florist who already does small wedding work is ideal. Tell them it is an elopement, outdoor, no install.
Some couples pick flowers the morning of from a grocer or a garden and it looks exactly as unforced as it is. That only works if you like imperfect. If you want something considered, book the florist and keep the brief short.
You can skip them
Hands, clothes, landscape. That is a whole photograph.
If flowers feel like extra stuff in the car, leave them out. A jacket, a ring, the two of you in good light will carry the pictures. I will not be standing there wishing you had more foliage.
Timing
Collect them close to the ceremony so they do not cook in a parked car. Assign one person — you, a parent, your celebrant’s kit — so they do not become a project at 7am.
After the portraits, they can go on the lunch table or stay in the room. They have done their job.
A simple brief you can send
Outdoor elopement in the South West. One handheld bouquet, one buttonhole. Seasonal, relaxed, able to handle wind. No arch, no install, no petals.
That is enough information for someone who knows what they are doing.
If you are torn, choose the smaller option. In this region the backdrop is already generous. Flowers should feel like a detail you wanted — not like a wedding you were trying not to have.
